Record visitor numbers and a wave of anti-tourism protests made headlines across the continent this summer, and a growing list of cities has introduced day-tripper fees, hotel levies and cruise limits to ease the pressure. The message from many locals has been clear: the crowds have become too much.
Travellers are listening – and the crowds aren’t the only thing redrawing the map. Long-haul travel has lost some of its appeal, more families are choosing the car over the plane, and a run of hot summers has sent people north rather than south. More and more travellers are skipping the peak-season crush: travelling in spring and autumn, trading busy city centres for the countryside, and seeking out quieter corners that rarely make the front page. It’s a welcome shift, and often a more rewarding way to travel.
Northern Europe is a destination now, too
We see it clearly from where we sit. The Nordics have always been a place travellers set off from. Increasingly, they are where travellers arrive: for cooler summers, long coastlines, mountain roads and space to breathe. Summer figures from our partner AXA Partners Benelux point the same way – medical assistance cases in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland rose by 38% over June and July.
It is a wonderful part of the world to discover. It is also a part of the world with long distances between towns, short seasons in the rural regions, and services that thin out quickly once you leave the main routes.
That is the region our alarm centre has worked in since 2009, and it is where our local network runs deepest.
Off the beaten track means further from help
In a major city, support is never far away. There are international clinics, English-speaking doctors, well-known hospitals and repair shops on almost every corner. Head into a quiet rural region or travel out of season, and the picture looks different. The nearest hospital might be an hour or more away. Local services may be fewer, or closed for the winter. A simple roadside breakdown can turn into a long wait when there’s no garage nearby.
And most of what happens isn’t dramatic. Someone falls ill and needs a doctor on the spot, or a night in hospital. An engine gives up, or a tyre does. Repatriations and emergencies are the cases that make headlines, but they are the rare ones. The everyday cases are ordinary problems – they simply become much larger ones when you are a long way from the nearest town, out of season, in a language you don’t speak.
None of this should stop anyone from exploring Europe’s hidden gems – it’s often the best kind of trip. It simply means the support behind the journey needs to reach a little further.
